I expected a run-of-the-mill applause fest. There was no expectation that anything even remotely substantive would be revealed from a speech designed to provide quotable quotettes and standing ovations. But, man, that gathering of weasels provided visual moments I will never forget.
1. "We don't quit. I don't quit!"
Here was a perfect Chicago blend of "playing to the base" and angry ugly political threat. All the passionate Tea Party demonstrators, and the citizens quickly realizing America's big electoral mistake, were told that they would not be heard. Theirs is an obstacle that will be traversed. Obama knows better. The Party knows what's best for you.2. "Don't ask. Don't tell."
Did you get a gander at the Joint Chiefs? Wouldn't you love to read the voice balloons that went with those glares? We are at war on two fronts, and the Commander-in Chief forcefully declares that we need more homosexuals in the armed forces. He listens to the Pandering Czar more often than he listens to his Generals.3. The Dressing-Down of the Supreme Court.
The Justices sit sullenly while being attacked pubically and internationally by the supposed Chief Executive. Is this a management style normal in Chicago political circles? Sorry... rhetorical question. The sight of the chastised Supreme Court seated and surrounded by standing and cheering Democrat Party members was burned into my political memory. There are many who will neither forgive nor forget that scene.
